Brocken-Challenge X 2013 Race Report

Five of ten…

On 1 December Lady Luck smiled on me and I was one of the few that got registered for the tenth anniversary running of the Brocken-Challenge.  Registration was full after a fast and furious ten minutes.

The Brocken-Challenge is among my absolute favorite ultra events.  Getting to it each year is much like a pilgrimage with thoughts on the course, the hosting organization and their charity work, race volunteers and the racers.  The entire event is a simple and lasting pleasure!  While running the B-C and in the immediate hours following the race you ask yourself “Why?, why put yourself through the cold, the distance, and the pain?”  It doesn’t take long for this wonderful event to wander back into your thoughts.  And, you begin to ask yourself, “Why not?”  And those thoughts transition to a longing, a longing to experience the wonder of the course as it spans from Göttingen, into the Harz and up to the Brocken summit.

On 9 February 2013 I ran my fifth Brocken-Challenge.  While enjoying its highs and toiling through its lows my thoughts often journeyed to what I might write here, what I might share beyond that which I’d already written in 2012 and prior.  As the center toe on my left foot slowly has its toenail turn black and my recovery diet slows down I’d like to share several random B-C thoughts with you.

The Brocken-Challenge highlights the start of my running year.  I know of no other race event where the kinship and friendliness extend full circle among the organizers, race volunteers, and racers themselves.  It’s not your typical race where commercialism and high octane egos get in the way.  Instead it’s an event where you can spend hours running with a friend, kilometers enjoying the scenery and environment, time making new friends or simply plugging into an MP3 player for some motivation.

The B-C occurs at a unique time of the year where winter still has its cold grip on the environment and how the day is going to unfold weather wise is anyone’s guess.  2013 was no exception with this B-C as my second coldest.  Temperatures ranged from -2C/28F, light snow flurries and no wind in Göttingen and -9C/15F and winds at 39 – 49 KM/H on the Brocken summit.  These temperatures and wind actually contributed to a comfortable running day with the cold really setting in over the last 10 or so kilometers of the race.  For an old boy from Texas these unique weather conditions and the natural environment of the Harz National Park and Brocken are a uniquely rewarding experience.

The course of the B-C is laid out over 80KMs that winds itself largely downhill over the first forty odd kilometers and then in the second half gains elevation into the Harz National Park and up Brocken massif.  The “ultra” nature of the B-C really started for me at about km 53.  Combined with the fact that I neglected to discipline my intake of fuel and the fact that the trail surface was characterized by fresh/churned snow I was sucking.  Because of the trail surface I couldn’t run and with a lack of fuel in my gut I was feeling down on myself.

It’s during these low points that you must recognize an ultra event for what it is.  The old saying that, “90% of ultrarunning is 100% mental” is spot on.  In order to get through this part of the B-C I broke down things to their elemental pieces.  For the running surface I attempted to relax into the fact that I was not going to change it; I could not run it; I’d just walk it until I was physically capable of running again.    The food that I consumed at the mid-way station at Barbis was obviously not enough for what my body needed.  In fact I was ravished.  In a matter of minutes I ate two energy bars and a couple of pieces of jerky and took a couple of good long drinks.  And finally, as I moved over what seemed like an endless beach volley ball court trail I tuned into so good music.

There are three songs that I have used to get motivated here in the depths of the B-C.  These include the Aggie War Hymn, Noble Men of Kyle and Juli’s Dieses Leben.  With some carbs coursing through my body and the Aggie Band playing in my head my worries of gutting this leg of the B-C were swept away.  It’s funny how emotionally raw an endurance event of this nature can make you.  I have a special tie to the Aggie music described above.  Listening to it takes me back to my days in the Corps at A&M, friends and experiences.  Hearing, “RECALL!  Step off on Hullabaloo….”  gives me goose bumps, puts a smile on my face and gets me moving forward.

There are several odds and ends that will remain a pleasurable memory for me from this anniversary Brocken-Challenge.  These include:  Breakfast at 0500 in the Old Dance Hall.  And actually, the entire food plan which was simply amazing.  All of it organic and oriented towards a vegan diet.  I wish that I could eat like that every day!  Running with Rolli, Sandra, Udo, Martin, Volker, Micha and many others.  Rolli and I generally meet about the same place on the course each year and spend a couple of hours catching up on things.  I had hoped to finish up, as we had the last two years, with Werner, but never made the linkup between Königskrug and Oderbrück.  I hope to do so next year!  The party atmosphere after in the Brockenwirt.  And believe it or not, the 10KM hike down to Schierke after the event.  I don’t know anyone’s names, but it was fantastic to walk with our group of eight.  Hope to run into you all again either at the B-C or another ultra event.  Runners actually do talk about much more than running.

Each event seems to have its motto or mantra.  For the Brocken-Challenge the Ausdauersport für Menschlichkeit e.V., Göttingen (ASFM) drew from J.W. v Goethe’s “Secrets”, “Von der Gewalt, die alle Wesen Bendet, befreit der Mensch sich, der sich überwindet.”  Or…  “From the great powers that each creature binds, the man who conquers self will freedom find.”  I gave this idea some passing thought each time I’ve run the Brocken-Challenge, but never really considered it in detail until this year.  Its depth was revealed to me ironically along the Goetheweg as I made my final approach to the Brocken summit.

Several statistics…  In past years the running field has been limited to 150 starters.  This year the ASFM expanded that field twice because of the growing interest in this event.  On Monday, 4 February there were 204 people fully registered to participate.  On Saturday morning, 9 February 183 runners started the event.  Of these runners 172 completed.

It was tremendous to take part in the tenth running of the Brocken-Challenge.  The host, ASFM, is an incredible group with an admirable mission of fostering sport and channeling their efforts towards charitable ends.  Unlike past years where it either a point in the course where I knew I was going to finish, or a couple of days of recovery, I have been planning to sign up for the 2014 B-C since 1 DEC 2012!

Week in Training 14 – 20.01.13 Brocken Focus

This past week, although somewhat limited in overall mileage, was a super training week.  The first part of the week I kept my mileage down to the 10K distance as I took no breaks as scheduled on Monday.  By Wednesday I moved up to two back to back 13KMs.  Friday was again a 10KM leaning into the weekend.  Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 21 January, I did a triple shot 21KM.  And now, sitting here Monday, although a little tired I’m feeling no injuries creeping up on me which is super news!  I plan to mix it up tomorrow with 10KM speed walk in the snow.  Fourteen days straight through!  Love it!

Where is all of this headed…?  Well, first up is the Brocken-Challenge.

Training conditions for the BC could not be better.  We’ve had snow and ice for almost entire past two weeks.  The outlook will remain constant over the next four or five days.

I’m fired up about this year’s tenth anniversary running of the Brocken-Challenge.  Aside from the “round year” this race is a unique charity event in that ALL proceeds go to the charities described below.  Registration fees are considered a one hundred percent donation as are all food, beverages, volunteers, fuel, starter tee-shirts, you name it, it is donated in support of this event and the results of its charity work.  In other words – there is no bureaucracy or back side support associated with the race or its charitable work.  All donated activities and funds go to:

The Hospiz an der Lutter, Göttingen.  The Hospiz an der Lutter is a hospice for those that are terminally ill whom have entered the final stages of their lives.

“Kreuz und Quer” Kindergarten, Göttingen.  Charitable donations will assist in the rebuilding of this Göttingen neighborhood kindergarten following a fire caused by arson in September 2012.

TUSPO Weende Kinder-und Jugend-Radsport.  The TUSPO is an organization that supports youth participation in cycling.  Donations will assist with renovation of the club’s bike track.

Hospital and Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children (HRDC), Banepa, Nepal.  BC donations will support this medical treatment activity in Nepal.

Interested in helping one or more of these efforts?  How about helping me push through with a kilometer or mileage donation?  The BC is 80KM or 50 miles in length and traverses some of Northern Germany’s most beautiful countryside with the finish line located on the Brocken Summit.  Drop me a line at my e-mail or PM on Facebook.  Every form of support is greatly appreciated!

Week in Running 31.12 - 6.01.13

This past week, the first of 2013 was a fantastic training week!  Am slowly increasing my mileage and continue the battle for time to get out and run some longer routes.

Early in the week I got in my usual fair of 10 and 13KM routes.  With few exceptions I can get one of these in before heading out for work.  I thought I could get in a doubleheader on Thursday and thankfully got in nice 10KM out here...

Not being the master of my own schedule the doubleheader fell by the way side based on things at work.  Starting out in the morning I almost convinced myself to stay in (it will be daylight this afternoon and you'll have time to do at least a 20KM), but thankfully I didn't.

I took Friday off to rest a bit with plans to run a B2B this weekend.  Saturday I got in a 35KM.   This morning I ran a Venusberg route and added a new route because of the Dreikoenigslauf (I completely forgot that it was going on today.).  Today's route took me over 20KM of wonderful countryside.

Next week is another UP week with increased mileage.  We'll see where it goes...

Hey out there...  It's 2013!  Another great opportunity to get out and do some running around.  The question is where to...?

Hope you all are enjoying the new year and shaking out those legs.

Year End...

Wait, wait, wait...  2012 is almost over with and there's still so much to discuss.  Kidding!

Things are ramping up for 2013.  I have confirmed registrations for the Brocken-Challenge, Hexenstieg Ultra, Barbarossa Relay and UTMB!  If I can swing these and the others that I've got my sights on, work and the rest of life 2013 will be a great year.

More to come. Until then a bit of motivation...

2013 and the Beat Goes on...

Ah...  December and the racing season is winding down for the year.  Still up is the Nikolauslauf in Tübingen on 9 December, but otherwise time for good food, bad weather, planning and training.  As they say in Schwabeland...

While enjoying the short days and the occasional Christmas cookie it's time to start planning a bit for the upcoming year.  Work and the ability to get away is going to drive much of my plan and I'm certain there will be other distractions, but this is what I'm planning for 2013:

  • Brocken-Challenge, 80KM, 9 February, Göttingen to the Brocken summit (Harz), Germany.
    • This year marks my fifth running of the BC.  A super charity event!
  • Bilstein Marathon, 53KM, 14 April, Kaufunger Wald, Germany.
    • I'm new to the Bilstein and have not yet registered.  Looks like a great event!
  • Hexenstieg, 216KM, 26 - 28 April, Harz, Germany.
    • Second go for the Hexer.  Last year was fantastic!  Registration is complete.
  • Le Grand Raid Dentelles Ventoux, 100KM, 18 - 19 May, Gigondas, France.
    • I swore last year that I would not run this deliciously evil race again.  It's simply too wonderful not to.
  • Cortina Trail, 46KM, 28 June, Dolomites, Italy.
    • First year running the Cortina Trail.  A friend from Canada suggested it and we're going to give it a shot.
  • ThueringenULTRA, 100KM, 6 July, Thueringen, Germany.
    • Another of my annual favorites!
  • Barbarossalauf, 323KM multi-stage, 14 - 19 July, Thueringen, Germany.
    • Yes...  323KM over five days.  First time giving this one a go.  Micha Frenz the organizer puts on super events and I thought I'd give this one a go.  Registration is complete.
  • Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, 30 August - 1 September, Chamonix, France.
    • The UTMB...  What more can I say.  I did not get a slot last year and have a guaranteed starter number this year.  2013 will be my third attempt.  Got to get this one behind me!
The year may see one or two additions or "did not register" and I've still go to settle on what comes in the Fall of 2013.  For now...  Time to focus on the Nikolauslauf and get ready for the Brocken-Challenge.  It's going to be a good year!

Brocken-Challenge 2013

The tenth edition of the Brocken-Challenge is scheduled to go on 9 FEB 2013.  If you've followed this blog for a bit of time or read up on the Brocken-Challenge you'll know that this is a super event.  The course, friendly atmosphere, field of runners (limited to 150), and charitable objective of the event is simply fantastic.  These factors, combined with the upcoming tenth anniversary contributed significantly to many runner's desire to take part.

For the past couple of months concluding over the course of the last two weeks followers of the Brocken-Challenge have been very excited about the opening of the registration period, 1 DEC 12 - 31 JAN 13.  The event organizers had generated a great deal of excitement through their Facebook Page.  You've got to realize that the event filled to capacity in about twenty hours in December 2011.

This year's registration was scheduled for 1 DEC at 2359.  Yes, way past my bed time, but I decided to stay up to see if I could gain a slot.  I watched a bit of television and did some reading leading up to the witching hour.  At 2355 I was logged on here ready to go...  I watched the clock tick down and hit my F5 to refresh the registration page at 2359ish and go lucky...  The registration template opened; I quickly filled it out and hit "Enter".  Shortly thereafter I got a confirmation e-mail with my registration confirmation.

On a lark I remained on-line within FB.  At 0010, Frank and Aschu posted that the 2013 Brocken-Challenge was full.  An unbelievable eleven minutes!  Yes, you read that correctly - 11 MINUTES!!  Amazing!!!  I was thrilled to have secured a spot, but saddened to see so many of my running friends and acquaintances not make it in.

As a consolation, a Waiting List has been established.  As of mid-day on 2 DEC there are fifty people on the list...

2013 is going to be a great running year!
